Adolescent Relapse Prevention

Overdose deaths among adolescents are rising and effective substance use treatment with adolescents requires more than just simplifying adult interventions. Providers on the front lines of this growing public health crisis need specific education and developmentally appropriate interventions to support the adolescent population with their unique needs and challenges as they attempt to establish and maintain recovery. 

This presentation provides viewers with a brief overview of the current trends in adolescent substance use, discussion of adolescent development, and special considerations needed when working with adolescents. Viewers are introduced to the Gorski-CENAPS adolescent developmental model and the newly updated adolescent relapse warning signs. Viewers are asked to explore their personal beliefs about adolescent substance use and learn strategies to prevent burnout. Viewers will have a deeper understanding of how to effectively deliver adolescent relapse prevention treatment to help facilitate a recovery process for young people.

The video content was recorded at the Preventing Relapse Symposium, Starting Addiction Treatment and Recovery Off Right on April 21st-22nd, 2023 held in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The goal of the Symposium was for attendees to learn and enhance techniques across all levels of care with proven and practical applications of the Gorski-CENAPS Model of Recovery and Relapse Prevention, implemented with a wide variety of programs, clients, and special populations. Sessions were designed to be applicable and informative to providers and consumers at all skill levels and various lengths of personal recovery.
